What to Wear to Your Family Session By Creations

One of the most common questions I get before a family session is: "What should we wear?" Your clothing choices can make a huge difference in the overall look and feel of your images.

The right outfits help create timeless photographs that you’ll treasure for years to come. Here are my top tips for choosing outfits that photograph beautifully while letting your family’s personality shine.

1. Start with a Color Palette

Pick 2–3 main colors and add 1–2 softer accent shades.

Neutral & timeless: Ivory, cream, beige, tan, soft gray, muted blush.

Rich & warm: Deep green, mustard, burgundy, navy.

Soft & airy: Pastel blues, soft pinks, sage, light peach. Avoid neon colors or very bright whites, as they can reflect onto skin and be distracting.

2. Coordinate — Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone in identical white shirts and jeans! Instead, choose outfits that coordinate by sharing the same color tones without being identical.

Think variety in textures and patterns while staying within the palette.

3. Layers & Textures Add Depth

Knit sweaters, flowy skirts, cardigans, scarves, and hats can add interest and dimension to your images. In cooler months, layers also keep everyone comfortable so you can focus on enjoying the session.

4. Keep Comfort in Mind

If you’re comfortable, it will show in your photos. Make sure children’s clothing isn’t scratchy or stiff. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive.

Test outfits ahead of time — if you can move easily and feel confident, you’re on the right track.

5. Consider Your Location & Season

Outdoors in nature: Earth tones and soft colors work beautifully. Studio session: Light neutrals or soft pastels create a timeless feel.

Fall sessions: Rich, warm colors like rust, mustard, and deep green pop against autumn leaves. Spring sessions: Light pink, blue, or cream keeps the images fresh and airy.

 6. Simple Patterns Are OK

Small, subtle patterns can add interest — think tiny florals, gentle plaids, or delicate polka dots.

Avoid large, bold prints or busy logos that may distract from faces.

7. Think About the Whole Image

Shoes, accessories, and hairstyles all complete the look. Keep shoes clean and neutral. Avoid bright sneakers unless they’re part of the story.

For accessories, less is more — aim for classic pieces that won’t date your photos.

 8. Plan Ahead

Lay out everyone’s outfits together a week before your session. Snap a quick phone photo to see how everything looks side by side.

This helps catch any clashing colors or missing elements early.

Final Tip: Be Yourself Your photos should reflect your family’s personality. If flowy dresses aren’t your thing, that’s okay!

Pick clothing that makes you feel like you — confident, comfortable, and happy. That joy will shine through in every image.

Newborn photography is about more than creating cute baby pictures — it’s about preserving your family’s first story.

In today’s digital world, AI is everywhere—even in photography. From artistic edits to creating entire scenes from scratch, AI images are popping up across social media. While this technology can feel overwhelming or even concerning, I believe it has its place when used in the right way. As a professional photographer, I want to share how AI can be used for good—and why real, professional photography still matters most when it comes to preserving your family’s story.

Certain moments in life can’t be repeated. A maternity glow, a newborn’s first days, a child’s milestone—these are once-in-a-lifetime memories. That’s why it breaks my heart when I hear from families whose photographers cancel at the last minute, leaving them without someone to capture those fleeting moments. Not long ago, I got a call from a dad in Tinley Park who was desperate for help. His wife was dressed in a stunning maternity gown, her hair and makeup were professionally done, and their daughter was ready for pictures. Then, just one hour before their session , their photographer canceled.
